Local secret but not for long
There’s a lot to love about Long Play. It’s the kind of place that makes you think you’d consider buying real estate to make you a local. Some may remember the site of the old Glitch Bar & Cinema which used to occupy this spot in the northern part of St Georges Road, up the end near Danny’s Burgers.
Perhaps christened Long Play partly as a nod to Mediterranean gents’ card nights, the space has had a makeover since its Glitch days, with a long bar installed down one side and booths on the other. (Think The Alderman layout and charm, but with polished fine lines). A shiny new coffee machine has appeared in the second room. A small kitchen with a Salamander grill is tucked at one end of the bar, and the turntables with a very healthy vinyl collection are at the other.
The tone, choreographed by two hospitality pros, is a perfect balance between your friendly local barman and polished, perfectly timed-service – not easy to strike, but they make it look effortless. The blackboard menu offers exquisite nibbles, tasty morsels and glorious desserts.
Mercifully, it’s still possible to pull up a bar stool or snaffle a table on a Saturday night, without having to glare out other diners, but it won’t last. Get in before the secret’s out.
