Fit for a Chocoholic
If you think Art Deco glamour, fair trade and chocolate can’t be mentioned in the same breath, then you’ve obviously never been to Coco Loco. Tucked away in High Street Northcote this haven of taste – in both senses of the word – has delighted in-the-know locals for ages, but it’s about time we all discovered this sweet secret. It just happens to be the ‘planet’s first certified organic and fair trade chocolat bar’.
Owned and run by Khaled Sherbini, entering Coco Loco is like being transported back in time to a classy Middle Eastern bar during the decadence of the Jazz Age. Mirrors and monochrome prints of Sherbini’s grandfather – world champion ballroom dancer and Berlin nightclub owner – line the walls which have been painted in a terracotta effect. Stylish black leather booths and typically art deco walnut tabletops – personally designed by the multi-talented Sherbini – add polish to the look.
So how does fair trade figure in this elegant equation? The answer is in the chocolate, or chocolat as Sherbini terms his quality product to differentiate it from all the supermarket shelf varieties. All items on the Coco Loco menu containing chocolat are fair trade certified via Rapunzel, a German based company fostering sustainable farming practices and global fair-trade programs.
While chocolat is the star here, an ingredient to note is Kashew Mylk, a concoction made from a secret family recipe exclusive to Coco Loco using certified organic cashews which lends a lightness to the desserts, drinks and even savoury dishes. That’s right – Coco Loco isn’t only about cocktails, coffee and chocolat.
We’d suggest a lengthy rest stop here for a sophisticated late afternoon or soiree. Get familiar with a Latin Lover (mocha coffee, flavoured with cinnamon and dark chocolat), perhaps along with some smokin’ Coco Cigar pastries. Coco Loco’s unusual fusion of elements is a pretty enticing mix. Suggest you come on over.
