Is It Café
This hot new cafe is it
Many of us remember the Greville Street of old – a thriving hub of live music gigs (the Continental anyone?), sensational eateries and independent and quirky designer fashion. And then the street seemed to lose its groove sometime around the late 90s. But something exciting is currently unfolding – the Greville/Izett Street precinct is indeed experiencing a rebirth (Ladro, Aesop (coming soon), A Shop Called Milton) and the subject of our admiration today, a brand spanking new café on Izett Street (near Greville corner) called Is It Café.
Is It is a welcome addition to the area and brings with it a fresh menu, a more mature crowd (not so much a ‘come down’ café as a ‘come on down’ café) and a hip and cosy vibe. The food is all made on the premises (right down to the jams and chutneys) with high quality seasonal ingredients and breakfast served all day, every day. The homemade shakshuka with chorizo is a crowd pleaser, as is the chunky avocado with Persian feta and lemon tea salt. And for a true indulgence, the French toast sandwich with chocolate, glacé ginger, marscarpone and caramelised pear is worth all the calories.
Speaking of sweet, the counter is overflowing with home-baked goodies, including muffins (we loved the raspberry and white chocolate), chocolate and pecan brownies and cappuccino cupcakes with white chocolate icing.
On weekends Is It will whisk you away to a foreign land with their specials, whether it’s matzah ball soup in New York or spiced lamb meatballs in Morocco. For now, warm yourself by the fire with a glass of wine (yes, they’re fully licensed!), a pot pie or a bowl of hearty soup served with a Dench roll. And keep an eye out for the extensive organic fair trade tea menu, coming soon.
Is it? Yes, it sure is.
