Latin Feast at Innocent Bystander
A not entirely innocent feast
September 14,2010
The Innocent Bystander/Giant Steps winery is snuggled in the heart of Healesville and is run by some of the cheekiest hospitality folk you’ll find. Now they’ve decided that ‘to save water’ they’ll make their sourdough using dark ale from the White Rabbit brewery next door. Cheeky and genius some might say. Waste of good ale others may claim (given that it’s a damn fine beer!)
Anyway, their latest planned fiasco is a Latin Feast. They say it will be nothing like the 1973 French classic La Grande Bouffe. We don’t pretend to know exactly what that means or entirely trust that there will be no resemblance (considering the above comments regarding cheekiness).
What is for certain is an enticing night of good food and outstanding wine. This is a great winery after all. Home to Agenda favourite, the Innocent Bystander Moscato and many great Giant Steps sips, we’re sure this will be a winner – even if the beer-bread’s not on the menu.
Good food doesn’t mean simple here though, as the menu reveals. An impressive opening tapas includes spring bay mussels amongst many other mouth-watering gems, followed by pisco and lime sorbet. The main features twice-cooked pork belly with quince jam and the finisher is crème caramel with Chilean honey and almond praline.
Pick up the phone and make a reservation. Somebody’s got to keep an eye on these out-of control kids and at $55 a head, you’re the right person for the job.
