Post Office Hotel
Resurrected Pub With All The Credentials
A much-needed oasis on the infamously chaotic Sydney Road, the newly relaunched Post Office Hotel is a heady concoction of perfect ingredients for a chilled city-grazing pub.
This definitive olive in Coburg’s martini, despite grandiose art deco façade and sophisticated beer offering, exudes a humble allure. Recently acquired by a motley crew of rock music types, the age-old (since 1855) watering hole has been masterfully re-devised, blended and garnished to capture a laid-back lounge feel.
This spot is totally neat, not least for the four awesome dudes who run it. Having collectively traipsed the gamut of the musical world, Danial, Patrick, Shannon and Tex add a welcome authenticity to Melbourne’s flourishing bar repertoire. The rock tunes emanating from a pristine condition 1980’s jukebox surely attest to the guys’ musical cred. Just as surely as the DIY communal dining table derived from a bowling alley, and soon to be bestowed with a blinging deco chandelier, lends silent praise to their unique style.
A sunny beer garden cheerfully spilling out of the semi restored 1920’s dining area plays host to a gleaming bumper BBQ, primed for upcoming Sunday sizzle sessions. Allow yourself a moment to absorb the outdoor retreat’s leisurely vibe and hours later you’ll still be tippling your way through the hand picked beer, wine and cider list – cosier than in your own back yard.
A gastro pub-fare kitchen is etched into the script, albeit a couple of months away. For now, swagger down muso lane and nutrify with some hearty ale. There’s even a little something beckoning from the fridge to satisfy organic and low carb diets, so to good health it is.
