The Bellarine Peninsula Taste Trail
Taste adventures in your own backyard
We tried it and loved it. Now your turn! The Bellarine Peninsula Taste Trail (nothing to do with Hansel and Gretel) is truly ingenious. There are plenty of treats to sample – these are our picks for the sights, sounds and tastes of this glorious area.
650 Andersons Rd, Drysdale
Recent recipient of two chefs hats, Loam restaurant in Drysdale has a unique menu listing ingredients in alphabetical order. Choose what you fancy and let chef Aaron Turner create something truly unique.
35 Point Lonsdale Road, Point Lonsdale
Number 35 has forever changed our floral-curtains-and-matching-bedspreads view of the B&B. Paul and Marg are the hosts of this gorgeous architect-designed home. They’re clearly living their dream and when they offer to bring you breakfast in bed, you’ll be living yours too.
255 Grubb Road Wallington, Ocean Grove
Quirky does not begin to explain Oakdene’s bold approach to interior design. You might like to stay overnight in one of their quirky themed rooms or visit the orchid garden. However, the absolute highlight of Oakdene (and there are many) is the dining. Executive Chef Marty Chichester presents sophisticated yet comforting fare. The dessert platter alone is worth a visit.
Queenscliff Railway Station, Queenscliff
It would be remiss of us not to highlight the surprise star of the Bellarine Peninsula, and that is The Blues Train. It’s actually not part of the taste trail and that’s because the meal is hearty boarding school fare, perfect for its purpose – which is lining your stomach before one of the most fabulous nights of your life. Got to be seen to be believed!
1400 Portarlington Road, Curlewis
While away an afternoon at Leura Park Estate winery in Curlewis – together with the predictably excellent wines and laid-back live music, there is a menu of delectable pizzas (try the potato), fantastic yum cha, and a sizzling hot rocks hot plate where you can cook your own meal right at your table. Cheers!
Notes –
Where: The Bellarine Peninsula is just past Geelong, depending on how far in you’re heading it’s 1.5 to 2 hours from Melbourne – and easy to find!
