Backyard Adventure: Castlemaine

Finished the Christmas shopping, go for a drive...

Backyard Adventure: Castlemaine

Castlemaine locals will tell you it’s where the gold rush all began. Some might even claim that there’s an influx happening again, people after a new beginning, a different lifestyle. And whilst Castlemaine’s population is still small, and the community close-knit, they’re welcoming it with open arms. From the historic streetscapes to wineries close-by Castlemaine is backyard adventure worth the drive.

Eat & Drink

Public Inn – corner Mostyn and Barker Streets, Castlemaine (PublicInn.com.au)

The pub on the corner (‘Criterion Corner’ as it is known) has been the local since the 1850s. Mosey in the front door now and it’s a gorgeous restaurant, with local wine poured straight from the barrel, and polished, knowledgeable hosts who’ll call you mate. Perfection.

The Good Table – 233 Barker Street, Castlemaine (TheGoodTable.com.au)

Bringing a little city chic to Castlemaine, The Good Table’s chef hails from Movida. Unsurprisingly you’ll find tapas-style sharing fare – a perfect way to while away the evening.

Where to Stay

Apple Annie’s – 31 Templeton St, Castlemaine (AppleAnnies.com.au)

We couldn’t go past the country comfort of Apple Annie’s apartments – also part bakery and café so you’ll rise to outstanding aromas. Our apartment was fitted with delightful period detail including claw foot bath. Apple Annie’s is definitely the place to rest in Castlemaine.

Where to Play

The Restorers Barn – 129-133 Mostyn Street, Castlemaine (RestorersBarn.com.au)
You’ll want to take your time meandering the 10,000 square feet of antique and reproduction collectables and fittings. There’s one room for crockery alone, beautiful chandeliers hanging from the ceilings, drawers of knobs and more, much, much more.

Harcourt Valley Vineyards – 3339 Calder Highway, Harcourt (HarcourtValley.com.au)

Certainly not the only winery worth a visit in the region but you can’t go past Harcourt Valley Vineyards at the moment. Just 15 mins from Castlemaine, this family owned boutique winery was recently awarded ‘Best Shiraz’ for their ’08 Barbara’s Shiraz at this year’s Le Concours Des Vins Du Victoria. Le Concours des Vins du Victoria is a unique wine competition in that it involves a panel of French wine experts and commentators judging Victorian wines.
