Would you care for some kitsch on your pizza?
A pizzeria in Sorrento is doing its darndest to keep the fun in pizza alive. Il Pirata is – you guessed it – a pirate-themed pizzeria. It’s so over-the-top that it works. The walls are a shade of deep-sea blue, the furniture is made from the salvaged wood of fishing boats and surrounding the tables are rusted wooden chests, canoe-shaped shelves and orange and white-striped life rings. All that’s missing is an eye-patch wearing monkey.
The menu is just as goofy as the décor. The pizzas have names like “Treasure Island”, “Capt Jack Sparrow” and “Annie Bonnie”. But all themed silliness aside, Il Pirata makes some fantastic pizza. Owner Gianni owned three successful restaurants in the heart of Florence before moving to Perth. He opened his first restaurant – the original Il Pirata – four years ago in Doubleview, and it’s still currently running. But there’s more to the pizza than just the Italian influence: the dough and sauce are made on premises, the toppings are sourced daily and the pizzas are cooked in a wood fired oven.
Sadly, the servers don’t wear feathered tricorn hats or speak in a throaty pirate accents. I guess that’s where they drew the line. Shame, really.
