Smoult’s Continental Deli
Deli heaven in Maylands
July 16,2012
Foodies beware, you’ll think you’ve died and gone to heaven at Smoult’s Deli. Packed into this small shop is an amazing range of products from around the world and from our very own backyard. Everywhere you turn, there’s something new and luscious to discover.
There’s a formidable range of cheese from magnificent blues like Roquefort and stilton to oozy camembert and d’affinois that are cut to order from the wheel. Nearby hang cured meats, like old fashioned fritz, smoked wagyu beef and beautiful free range hams. Prosciutto begs to be stuffed into Smoult’s freshly baked baguettes, or perhaps, paired with a slab of farmhouse pate on your next charcuterie plate.
Picnic basket anyone? Smoult’s does those too. However for the time poor and peckish, there are baked lasagnes, gourmet pizzas and roast turkey are all made in house and ready to go.
Once you peel yourself away from the deli display, explore the wall dedicated solely to condiments. In this maze of shelving, there is passata from Italy, French pistachio oil and syrupy balsamic vinegars. Just when you think you’ve covered the realm of continental good food, there’s Valrhona chocolate as a tempting, sweet treat.
Hop into the deli on Sundays and they’ll be whipping up gourmet hot dogs from 11am. Wagyu beef, duck and veal Barossa sausages come fully loaded with onions, sauerkraut and relish.
This winter, Smoult’s are stocking Stonebarn truffles from the state’s south west (fungi connoisseurs get them while you can!). A welcome addition to the revamped Maylands precinct, a visit to Smoult’s could to see you eating your way around the world with minimum effort. Sounds like the perfect foodie weekend to me.
