Tenth State
For gifts, coffee and shelter from the storm
September 05,2012
The best shops are the ones that bring you into another world, like stepping through C. S. Lewis’s wardrobe – just without any fur jackets to tickle your nose.
The fact that our visit to Tenth State was in the middle of a hailstorm made the contrast between outside and in especially striking. Crawley’s newest gift-cum-coffee shop was like a warm, cosy den… but after a look around, we’re pretty convinced it’s like that in any weather.
Sisters Jess and Belinda are the proud owners of the week-old shop. The Perth locals transformed the former clothing store into a gorgeous little two-room gift shop and coffee bar.
The sisters looked far and wide to stock the store with an ecletic mix of accessories and basics. “I love quirky, vintage things, but our shop caters to different styles,” Jess told us.
On the beautiful box shelving built by 90° Carpentry sit neon rubber watches, vintage tea cup candles, tea towels, jewelry and home wares. Our favourite? The colourful range of Moksoks – moccasin-style slippers designed by the sisters themselves and made in Sweden. We’re hanging out for them to come in adult sizes!
In another corner of the shop is the mini-café. Tenth Estate serves delicious 5 Senses coffee and homemade sweet and savoury treats like carrot cake, roast pumpkin muffins and Oreo cupcakes. Word must be spreading about what’s on offer as the café welcomes a steady stream of students who pop in on their daily commute to UWA for some caffeine and sustenance.
Plans are in the works to bring in addition seating and even to set up an outdoor flower stall. Let’s just hope the hail stays away!
