Tra Vinh
Hawker-style Vietnamese food in adult-sized chairs
October 03,2012
In Vietnam, hawker’s food is eaten right in the thick of the urban action on miniature child-sized plastic chairs sandwiched between grimy scooters, pedestrians and the nearly palpable cloud of exhaust fumes. It only sounds terrible. It tastes delicious.
Luckily, we’ve got a tad more space for our Vietnamese hawker’s food here in Perth. We’re pretty sure we’ve found the city’s best Vietnamese restaurant and – best of all – the furniture is large enough to accommodate anyone whose booty is larger than a toddler’s. Hallelujah!
Tra Vinh in Northbridge is a place for good, honest Vietnamese food and not pretentious décor or romantic ambiance. The restaurant instead focuses on authentic flavours, large portions and speedy service, which is probably why its tables are perpetually filled with students, families and friends out for a casual meal.
Many come for classics like rice paper rolls, stir fries and noodle salads, but nearly everyone orders the pho – a delicious rice noodle soup made with chicken or beef that you season to taste with lime, bean sprouts, hoi sin and chilli sauces and fresh mint. It’s one of those belly-warming dishes that’s perfect on a chilly Spring day – so make sure to time your visit before the summer comes!
