Anaconda Adventure Race
Toughest race takes in the wildest of the west
Endurance, also called sufferance, stamina or durability, has redefined itself. It’s the Augusta leg of the Anaconda National Race Series – the most challenging, muscle scorching, and spectacular of the world’s adventure races. Here in our own backyard.
The only race of its kind in Australia, the third and most arduous leg reaches the sleepy town of Augusta on November 6th. Set to attract around 1700 competitors from around the world, it’s considered the largest race of its kind…anywhere.
A field of weekend warriors and elite professionals will be sweating it out; running, swimming, paddling and biking around some of the most the dramatic, and harsh terrain of south west Australia.
Not only competitors, large crowds are also expected to flock to Augusta to watch the event. Organised by Rapid Ascent, Director John Jacoby is the veteran race organiser and one of the most accomplished adventure racers in the world. And he has a well-deserved reputation for creating challenging racecourses.
Starting at the enormous slab of rock at the Cape Leeuwin Light house, competitors will complete a 13.5km run along some of wildest coastal landscapes. At Flinders Bay, they’ll take a cooling dip for a 1.9km ocean swim and run to Hardy Inlet before completing a heart pounding 13km kayak out into the Southern Ocean. It ends with a 32km run through bush and forest.
For those with a desire for more of the same muscle crunching, there’s still the 2.5km fun run. Not for the faint hearted, it promises the wildest of the west’s scenery as competitors get close to nature at its rawest.
With so many spectators flocking to watch the race, the event also features an adventure expo, food and market stalls and family events. And for those with any endurance left, there’s always the après race celebrations.
