Margaret River Cycle Trek

On your bike for coastal scenery, picturesque forests, fine wine and food

Margaret River Cycle Trek

You’ve done your share of cardio, a few biathlons… But if you’re looking for something to keep you interested and in tune for Summer, this is it.

Presenting the Margaret River Cycle Trek, a nine-day bike riding expedition through Margaret River, now taking reservations for their annual Regional Environment Centre Challenge. Run by volunteers with proceeds going towards the REC, the trip starts 4km south of Margaret River at Glenbrook Farm Stay on Sunday October 16.

Staying clear of main roads on sealed ones and bush tracks, you and 29 others will travel from Margaret River to Cape Leeuwin; returning via the Willyabrup wine Region, Margaret and Blackwood River catchments, Augusta, Hamelin Bay, Boronup Forrest and Contos Beach.

Camping by fire at night, your hard work will be rewarded with the delivery of warm meals, afternoon tea, coffee and cakes. And expect some gourmet treats too, with a few eats at wineries sprinkled in between rides.

Not all riding, additional activities in 2011 include a behind the scenes tour and wine tasting at Howard Park Winery, a tour of Jewel Cave and rest day at Augusta where you’ll enjoy dinner at the Blue Deck overlooking the Blackwood. Other highlights include whale watching, body surfing and canoeing at Augusta, lunch at Flinders Bay and numerous ocean swims, including one at Hamelin Bay.

As for your guides, there’s semi-retired geologist, environmentalist and enthusiastic mountain biker Peter Lane; windsurfer, mountain biker and foodie Paul Lane; biker rider, marathon runner, traveler and wine enthusiast Ngaire Caruso and outdoor adventurer Tracy Skippings.

To partake, you’ll need a well-serviced bike, repair and first-aid kit, water bottle, back pack and camping gear. Scenic secondary routes can be called upon for tired riders – who’ll look forward to a home cooked curry back at Glenbrook Farm Stay on the final day.

Sure beats weaving through traffic on route to work!
