2011 Wave Rock Weekender
Weekends worth of music, camping, films and good times
For the long-weekend, how about some quality music and film on the edge of the desert? Join a few others, some pre-historic rock formations, eerie salt plains, shiny salmon gums and wildflowers for the Wave Rock Weekender from October 28 to 30.
Produced by Soul Highway, who aim to build soulful music events for artists and patrons, this year’s line up features 20 Aussie and international music acts and about 10 feature films.
To get there, you’ll take the Brookton Highway 340km east of Perth to Hyden, setting up camp within 100m of Wave Rock: a 15m high, 110m long face of Hyden Rock, a 100 hectare rock formation that’s been sitting in the sun for over a 1000 million years with erosion to thank for its unique shape.
The music line-up includes The Tallest Man for acoustic rock ‘n’ roll, Electric Wire Hustle for a twist on modern hip hop, psychedelic and soul; The Bombay Royale ensemble for slammin’ surf, disco and funk tunes from 60s and 70s Bollywood and the Puta Madre Brothers for mariachi rock n roll soul music. Also staring will be Clairy Browne and her 9 piece rhythm and blues group the Bangin’ Rackettes, who’ve played at Big Day Out, Golden Plains and Melbourne Festival.
Among the films screening on the Wave Rock Weekender Cinema (with bean bags) will be Boy, a hilarious coming-of-age tale about heroes, magic and Michael Jackson; Lake Mungo, a ghost story which sees strange and inexplicable events transpire after a young girl drowns in the local damn as well as powerful crime drama Animal Kingdom, the true story of Lindy Chamberlain Evils Angels and Banksy’s Exit Through the Gift Shop.
With night music under the rock and campfire jams, you might also take a dip in the nearby 20m round, 6pm deep gypsum salt pond. Word is its buoyancy and therapeutic properties are greater than those of the Dead Sea!
A main bar will serve alcohol until 12am while for food, cook your own BBQ or pick up something from the various food vendors.
A pretty unique way to spend the weekend we think.
