Best Pies

Go on, take a bite out of one of Sydney's best pies!

Best Pies

1. Harry’s Cafe de Wheels || Corner Cowper Wharf Roadway & Brougham Rd, Woolloomooloo. Ph: (02) 9357 3074. harryscafedewheels.com.au

For a classic taste of Sydney you can’t go past Harry’s – the Woolloomooloo van has been serving up pie to locals, celebrities and late-night revellers since 1938 and is even registered on the National Trust. Grab the signature Tiger: a beef pie topped with mash, gravy and mushy peas.

2. Black Star Pastry || 277 Australia St, Newtown. Ph: (02) 9557 8656. blackstarpastry.com.au

Truth be told, there’s not a huge pie offering Newtown’s most famous bakery. But what is there is worth writing home about. Christopher The’s lamb shank, red wine and vegetable pie is a foodie favourite, with large tender chunks of meat in lighter-than-air pastry.

3. Bourke Street Bakery || 633 Bourke St. Surry Hills. Ph: (02) 9699 1011; 474 Gardeners Rd. Alexandria. Ph: (02) 8339 1001; 2 Mitchell St. Marrickville. Ph: (02) 9569 3225. bourkestbakery.com.ay

We know you know this bakery is the goods, but we couldn’t not mention Bourke Street Bakery. A lot of press gets given to the sausage rolls here, but the pies – like the beef brisket, red wine and mushroom – are just as worthy of the accolades.

4. Dinky Di Pies || 525 Old South Head Rd, Rose Bay. Ph: (02) 9388 2427. dinkydipies.com.au

Forget the Aussie name, the man behind this Rose Bay (and now Sydney-wide) bakery is entirely French. As is his training, which lends that desirable flaky texture to the pastry on the pies here. Plain steak, beef and burgundy and chicken and leek all get the thumbs up.

5. Pie Face || pieface.com.au

These days it seems everywhere we turn there’s a new Pie Face store opening, so it’s a good thing we like what they have to offer.  Chunky steak injected with cheese is hard to pass up after a night out and mini sweet pies (cherry or apple) are good pretty much any time of day.
