Awkward Sydney
A Bohemian paradise in the centre of Sydney
June 01,2012
Tucked away under a big billboard, directly across the road from the infamous Coke sign in Sydney’s Kings Cross, is a little bar with a lot of personality- Awkward Sydney.
Awkward bridges the gap between Kings Cross on its left and Darlighurst on its right seamlessly through chic design, a chilled patronage and a food and wine list that rivals some of the most established restaurants on the strip.
The cocktails are inspired interpretations of old favourites and notable highlights include the Peach Fuzz; a concoction of sour flavours and the Pink Flamingo; a pretty rhubarb, vanilla vodka and egg white for the girls.
The food menu echoes the entire Awkward attitude; fun, yet sophisticated. Sundays see a Brazilian BBQ where guests off the street can grab mini burgers, salads and hearty steaks any night of the week.
Awkward describes itself as an “Insane Funhouse” and that’s exactly the feeling you get when you walk through the French doors. Like when Alice fell down the rabbit hole, Awkward exposes guests to a world of quirkiness and bohemian art removed from the popular mainstream. Awkward founder, Fuzz Ali believes in fostering local creative talent, which prompted him to showcase singers, dancers, contortionists (yep, you heard right) fashion designers, artists and every other kind of odd-ball Sydney can throw at him through dedicated themed nights that are updated daily on the website.
The hand-painted walls are filled with illustrations of fictional characters, fairytale motifs, large Wind In The Willows-esque trees, and grand dames covered in the finest YSL jewels.
The soft lighting, deep mahogany and regal leather couches of the main bar and verandah are offset by the bright fake grass, gnomes and garden furniture of the fairy garden towards the back. The sheer versatility of this venue makes Awkward perfect for a function large or small.
Take a trip to Awkward for an eye-opening experience where you’ll never expect what you’ll get.
