Blacksheep
A Blacksheep hits Newtown
June 06,2012
Newtown has a new bar amongst its flock. Smack bang in the middle of King Street, where Funky Bar used to be, you’ll now find a refurbished, sleek cocktail lounge named Blacksheep. There are chandeliers, velvet walls, a fireplace and even a Nintento 64 arcade machine.
While taking in the ambiance, browse the cocktail list. There are the classics like your Cosmo and Mojito but further down the list it gets better. On our visit we developed an addiction to the rather creepily named Sheep Zombie: light, medium and dark rum, pineapple, almond, orange and guava. We can also highly recommend the oriental inspired Bangkok with gin, basil, coriander, lemongrass, ginger and chili and the Voodoo Doll blending vodka, vanilla, passion fruit and fire. Yes, there are pyrotechnics involved, it’s pretty exciting stuff and the taste alone is worth every cent.
The food, conceived by chef Liam Rooney, has been well thought out. Everything on the tapas style menu is designed to go perfectly with the drinks on offer, from the curly fries and mini corncobs to the rosemary, sumac and lime lamb skewers and the pork ribs with agave sauce. The tender squid marinated with smoked plum and chili really topped the list for us.
If you want something different and something suave, Blacksheep is certainly a stand out place to be in Newtown.
Check out their Facebook for live music events and $10 Sunday Bloody Marys.
