Get Down in the Club
A dance workout takes you nightclubbing, but without the hangover
June 21,2011
There are those nights where you hit the gym, eat healthy rabbit food and recoup on the couch. Then there are those when you walk out that door, dance your coulo off in the Cross, and party like a pre-convicted Lindsay Lohan.
And thanks to a new dance scene, there’s now a third option: be a club kid and nurture your body all at the same time. That’s the deal for Get Down in the Club, a fitness class without the flouro-lit dagginess of the gym, held within Soho nightclub. Yes, for once you can hit Kings Cross and be in bed by 10. Possibly.
The 50-person workouts combine hip-hop, r&b and pop music with choreography. They’re the brainchild of Libby Babet of Bottoms Up Fitness, an outdoor training group with a focus on yoga and dance. She held a private prototype of Get Down last month, and this Friday is the first one open to the public. “The classes appeals to people who are a bit scared to go to [classes at] the Sydney Dance Company or find gym classes too dorky – we’re a bit in between,” says Libby.
Friday’s class will be led by Holly G, a dancer and choreographer whose CV includes So You Think You Can Dance. Grab a drink and socialise for the first 30 minutes, then sweat it up to a 45-minute dance workout to a 2ManyDJs-like music mash-up, followed by 45 minutes learning a choreographed routine. Tracks span everything from T-Pain to Beyonce, Adele, DJ Z-Trip or Timbaland.
The classes are dominated by women, ages 20-35. Given the social setting, however, you guys out there may want to leave the barbells at home and seriously consider the (favourable) odds.
The gym/club combo does make for one conundrum: what to wear? Libby advises “slightly cooler than usual” workout gear, or relaxed street gear that you can move in. That might mean shiny tights, leggings a baggy singlet and your coolest hightops. Runners, Con’s and dance shoes are also good. “As long as they don’t wear heels, I’m happy,” says Libby.
Gentlemen, that goes for you too.
