Bite Club
Secret dining, a secret home & an option for secret admiring
August 04,2011
Sydney’s ever-expanding roster of underground dining opportunities are certainly keeping the eat scene, well, adventurous. And while plenty of them will get you snacked up, there’s one particularly adept at getting hungry hearts shacked up.
Even though Bite Club has been running for two years, it has still managed to keep itself below the radar screen, save a recent splash by Vogue Living. But just one look at the stylish meals amid the quirky, lavish surroundings of interior decorator Debra Cronin’s Woollahra home, and you’ll wonder how it stayed an enigma on the social scene for so long.
After stumbling across the wreck and falling for it, Debra renovated the home to its former glory and soon started hosting dinner parties with friend and ex-Otto chef David Speck. She describes the Bite Club house design as a mixture of Alice in Wonderland meets The Addams Family. There are certainly rustic and unconventional touches galore, making for an intriguing evening.
And to add to the fun, many of the dinner parties are for singles only, including this Saturday night’s feast. The Club has certainly done its fair share of matchmaking. Some of that also comes with an international flavour. A female participant is relocating to Sydney to be with a fellow foodie she met at the club, and there’s an LA resident who’s a regular fixture whenever he’s in town.
The menu is always seasonal, with French or Italian staples like slow-cooked beef cheeks and kingfish fondant – two of David’s favourites. This weekend, dishes include warm eggplant with prosciutto, ricotta and pesto; roasted kurobuta pork loin with Calvados and apple compote; and a chocolate mocha pudding with vanilla bean ice cream.
Debra says the nights attract interesting and outgoing people, who make for lively and fun discussion. And, failing that – or a decent love match – there are always Debra’s dogs, Ted and Daisy, for company.
You’ll need to book online to find out the secret location and females normally need to bring an eligible bloke with them. So line up your favourite wingman, build up an appetite at the gym, and get ready to work your best table-side mojo.
