The Bar at the End of the Wharf
Take in a show and the best view in town
April 18,2012
Unless you’ve been in possession of a ticket for a play, you probably wouldn’t have seen what used to be Sydney Theatre Company’s foyer bar – that’s usually how these things work. But by unveiling what they term a ‘proper’ bar, the STC have opened up their enviable wharf building to everybody, creating a casual drinking and dining space catering to more than the theatre crowd.
At first glance, it’s all about the view. Courtesy of the bar stool seating at the floor-to-ceiling windows and the two large balconies, diners and drinkers have an unparalleled outlook over the harbour from Balmain to the Bridge. But once you take a look around you’ll find the inside is just as impressive.
The interior comes courtesy of Alice Babidge, who’s designed many of the theatre productions held here over the past seven years. She’s retained the well-worn floorboards – a common feature across these heritage-listed buildings – and brought them up to date with bespoke furniture and modern fittings.
A simple ‘eat’ sign heralds the new dining experience. The menu, from Fresh Catering, is based around share plates and bar snacks like wagyu sliders, crispy prawns and salt cod croquettes. Under ‘drink’ you’ll find a conscientious collection of tipples: organic and biodynamic wines, a cider with ultra-low food miles and a local beer from Young Henry’s.
Add a morning menu of coffee and cake, and free-wifi to boot, and you’ve got the ideal spot for a daytime drop-in, but there’s still more than enough pizazz here for a pre-show drink on opening night.
