Victor Churchill
Window shop, walk in, ask your iphone
March 29,2010
Once upon a time ‘window-shopping’ was reserved for perusing twinkling out-of-reach treasures at Tiffany’s.
But over in Woollahra an unusual addition to the up-market boutiques on Queen Street is turning heads in a different realm of consumer lust.
You’d certainly be forgiven for entering Victor Churchill in search of fine jewellery or exclusive perfume.
But a tug of the brass sausage handles, followed by the arousing aroma of buttery rotisserie chicken will soon set taste buds lusting over the meaty merchandise.
Bringing butchery to the high street with serious class, this $1 million designer fit-out by Michael McCann of Dreamtime Australia negotiates a fine line between boutique and butcher.
Despite being established in 1876, not only do these guys still know their meat, as the live-carving behind glass doors makes you realize, but they know the new meat market too.
Beyond the sheer spectacle, the bold butcher’s shop comes with some serious gastronomic credentials and now, pretty bizarrely, an iphone app. Check out Ask the Butcher on iTunes for $1.99.
With the second most popular app in its category, ‘Ask the Butcher’ features timers for meats, recipes from top chefs and even a guide to knowing your cuts.
So while the thrill of a designer spending spree will have us going back again and again, still having their expertise at the touch of a screen once you get your purchases home will certainly help with the cooking.
