Watts On Crown
Serving up three square meals of taste, value and quality
March 13,2012
Watts On Crown are definitely an ambitious bunch, the new Crown Street eatery is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a week. But don’t think for a second this means they’re cutting corners or scaling anything back, every dish is packed full of flavour and very reasonably priced.
All the Surry Hills favourites make an appearance for brekky; Bircher muesli, Eggs Benedict, Omelette’s, Breakfast Burritos, French Toast and a Big Breakfast that includes pork and fennel sausages, streaky bacon and house baked beans. But the dinner menu is where the true talents of chef Hamish Watt (formally of Rockpool) really come out to shine.
The goat’s cheese and pumpkin ravioli and grilled sardines are big crowd pleasers, and then there’s the Sunday Roast, which comes complete with baked potatos, homemade stuffing and Yorkshire puddings. The cerviche kingfish with seaweed and sesame salad is top notch, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it become a signature dish.
If you’re looking for a nibble rather than a feast, Watts On Crown also offers Small Plates (available all day) which serve tapas sized treats such as perfectly cooked Barra cakes, goat’s cheese stuffed zucchini flowers and perfectly textured chicken liver parfait.
Crown Street is a veritable smorgasbord of restaurants, cafes, bars and everything inbetween, and yet Watts On Crown seems to be just what the place was missing. A non-assuming, quiet little eatery with impeccable service, and delicious food available at most hours of the day. And with such forgiving hours, you’ve really got no excuse not to get down there.
